How it Works

The greywater flows to a feed tank and after coarse filtering flows to a bioreactor. The bioreactor consists of a liquid chamber underneath a trickle bed. Liquid is periodically pumped from the liquid chamber and distributed on top of the trickle bed. The relatively large surface area within the trickle bed provides surface area for the growth of bacteria and the treatment of the waste. Oxygen levels are varied by changes in the recirculation on/off times to reduce the level of nitrogen.

Solids building up chamber under the bed are periodically pumped to sewer, blackwater treatment system or vegetation cell (see Super Natural).

A small portion of the recirculating liquid flows to small header tank and then through a booster pump UF membranes a UV unit and a back flush pump submerged in a water transfer tank. The liquid normally gravitates through the system but this flow is aided on occasions by the booster pump. The pressure drop across the membranes is adjusted to ensure there is sufficient flow out of the system at normal loads The membranes are backwashed when the level in the water tank reaches a set level . At the same time liquid is pumped out of the system.

The system alarms if the treatment tank or solids pump well reaches high level or the UV light fails. In this case the system will not pump out. An audiovisual alarm is triggered, as is a signal through the phone line to a remote monitoring site. The audio alarm is fitted with a mute switch that can be operated by the owner. The system continues to send an alarm signal to a remote monitoring site. The Super Natural system is fitted with a battery backup power supply for the operation of alarms in the event of a power loss. High solids and high-level liquid alarm functions remain active during mains power loss, although no pumps are operated.

The Super Natural greywater treatment system produces treated effluent of high quality that can be surface irrigated and in most cases recycled for toilet flushing, clothes washing and pavement washing and because of the quality used in applications where very high quality water is required.

The Super Natural Greywater treatmenmt system does not use any harmful chemicals such as chlorine. The high quality of the effluent produced from the system and the subsequent low levels of pollutants such as BOD5, suspended solids and no chlorine, means that there is only a positive effect on plants and soil.

The aerobically treated liquid and Vermicast (worm manure) produced from the Super Natural enhances the soil structure. The Super Natural Greywater treatment system is robust and efficient and consequently only requires two services per year, unlike conventional Aerated Wastewater Systems that require four services

Installation

The Super Natural Greywaterstandard treatment system is housed inside a 3000 litre approved plastic tank ready for connection to the sewer inlet and to mains power. The tank is approximately 1.8 metres in diameter and 1.8 metres high and weighs approximately 400kg.

Aqua Clarus will provide general information on the layout and available options for the vegetation cell and land application area. The exact sizing and location of the vegetation cell and land application area is site specific and should be determined by consultation between the installer (or an Aqua Clarus representative), the local Environmental Health Officer and the client. The land application area must be sub-soil and meet Local Authority requirements.

The Super Natural Greywater treatment tank can be installed above ground such as under a house, below ground or partially buried. In the majority of installations, the tank will be installed in the ground as close to the house as possible.

For in ground installation, a hole needs to be excavated prior to installation and suitable bedding material provided. For above ground installation the sewer entry pipe from the house needs to be at least 1.6 metres above the ground and a minimum of 1 metre head height is required above the tank to allow for servicing. The land application area can be some distance from the house.

A licensed plumber is required to connect the system to the sewage outlet from the house and a licensed electrician to run an in ground power supply to the system. (The plumber must be an Aqua Clarus accredited plumber or under the supervision of an Aqua Clarus representative).

Council Approval is required for the installation of the system.

Maintenance

Servicing: Under government legislation, a service agreement is required for all on-site sewerage treatment systems. This ensures that the system is periodically checked for correct operation. For the Super Natural, the inspection period is every six months.

Warranty: The Aqua Clarus Super Natural Greywater Treatment System is engineered from quality components and installed by qualified people. The system has an expected service life of more than twenty-five (25) years, excluding electrical and mechanical components. The Simply Natural system is covered by a Comprehensive Manufacturers Warranty of two (2) years on all parts and labour.

 

Accreditation

• Domestic system fully accredited in NSW, ACTand QLD. The system is in final stages of the approval process in Victoria and South Australia. Local council approval is required prior to installation of any on-site waste treatment system
• Accreditation of systems for apartment/townhouse obtained by Aqua Clarus on a site-by-site basis
